THE DISCOVERY OF BEHAVIOURAL SURPLUS, 100 X 70 CM, OIL AND MIXED MEDIA ON FIBREBOARD, 2024
Clauda is pleased to present Vasil Artamonov with Jakub Hájek and František Hanousek at NADA Miami 2026.
Vasil Artamonov’s work is closely tied to the development of the means of expression of twentieth-century historical movements. We can trace avant-garde styles such as constructivism, suprematism and cubo-futurism in his work, as well as conceptual tendencies and realistic art from the post-war period.
He reinterprets these established trends through painterly means, breathing new life into them with contemporary themes. The ethos of the avant-garde revolt corresponds with the artist’s definition of himself in relation to contemporary artistic trends, the political canon, and a social reality based on the commodification of man both by capitalist relations in general and by the social networks and online environments that have been proliferating over the last decade. Through his work, the artist points out that utopian dreams of the future are not a thing of the past and that their contemporaneity lies in the possibility of rediscovering visions of dignified futures for humanity. For many years Artamonov was part of an artistic duo with Alexey Klyuykov, with whom he won the 2010 Jindřich Chalupecký Award. He studied in the Studio of Painting at the Academy of Arts, Architecture & Design in Prague, where he also graduated from the Studio of Intermedia Confrontation.
Together with Argišt Alaverdyan currently runs Painting Studio 1 at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Brno University of Technology. He regularly exhibits in the Czech Republic and abroad, and his work is represented in the collections of the National Gallery Prague, the Prague City Gallery, the Moravian Gallery in Brno, the Gallery of Fine Art in Náchod, and others. Paintings he created with Alexey Klyuykov are now part of a permanent exhibition at the National Gallery Prague entitled 1939–2021: The End of the Black-and-White Era
Jakub and František (1994, Czech Republic) are based in Prague and Vimperk. Both hold master’s degrees from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. They have exhibited internationally, including solo exhibitions at C. Rockefeller Center for the Contemporary Arts in Dresden (2020), Holešovická Šachta in Prague (2020), and Future Suburban Contemporary in Copenhagen (2022). Their work has been included in numerous group shows, including A.M. 180 in Prague (2019), Futura Prague (2020), Bistro 21 in Leipzig, DáIava space in Prague (2021), Divoká Šárka (is still alive) in Prague (2021), Terén in Brno (2022), ClueLess Agency in Prague (2023), Acud gallery in Berlin (2024), Display in Prague (2024). Their work was also incorporated as an exhibition design at MeetFactory Prague (2023), Galerie Klatovy / Klenová (2023) and AQB Budapest (2024).
Working as a single entity, Jakub and František share a sense of foresight and synchronicity in their artistic practice. Co-authorship has never been merely a motive for them but rather a fundamental condition. It is the key to facing the challenges of the art industry, with its own materialist specifics. It is the constitutive element of reciprocity and friendship that helps them maintain their enthusiasm and motivation to remain engaged in artistic labor. Using different artistic languages—ranging from works on paper to complex installations—they create tiny connections between certain historical periods, all while preserving a poetic framework, which they refer to as “the universal industrial key drama, the transition from psychic woodiness to psychic metallicity.”
